Hey all! My name is Emma (you can call me Gellerpants) and I am a graduate student at UCLA studying Cognitive Psychology. I grew up in eastern Massachusetts, and received my B.A. in psychology from The George Washington University in DC. I currently work with Phil Kellman in the Human Perception Lab studying the effects of perceptual learning on the development of expertise and its applications to educational settings. I am fiercely passionate about improving math and science education, and was strongly influenced by my high school experience at the Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School ] in Devens, MA. I love writing for Psychology in Action because I get to explain to my friends and family what I actually do! (FYI, studying psychology does NOT necessarily mean you want to be a clinical psychologist!) Outside of my studies, I dance with a competitive hip hop team at UCLA and around the city. Some people think that being a PhD student and a hip hop dancer don’t mix, but I say ya gotta have balance.
